Plastic Free - Tip to reduce your plastic waste

Plastic Free | Four simple ways to reduce your plastic waste

One massive reason to quit the plastic is the effect of one use plastics on our oceans, it's devastating. With Sky's Ocean Rescue stating in their recent campaign.

'Every minute, the equivalent of a rubbish truck load of plastic goes in to our oceans, it never decomposes and will remain there forever. If nothing changes, by 2050 all the plastic in the ocean could weigh more than all the fish. Plastic impacts on an entire ecosystem, marine life get caught up in it, eat it and live in it. It also has a direct impact on our health, acting as a sponge for toxins which can end up in our food.'

Scary right? So my personal challenge is to make a conscious effort to create little changes to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

These are four of my favourite and simple ways to reduce your plastic waste to be more environmentally conscious.

1. The bamboo toothbrush

Next time you need a toothbrush, replace it with a bamboo one. These ones from Go Bamboo are biodegradable and recyclable plus they are suitable for the whole family with adult and child sizes. They have a natural bamboo handle sealed with an edible wax and come packaged in a sealed recycled cardboard box. When you’ve finished with your toothbrush you can put it to another use, like cleaning your bike or jewellery. When it’s really done its dash, shave the bristles off and recycle. The handle will break down eventually in compost.

2. The reusable bags

My pet hate - the plastic bag. These are given away so freely at shops to carry the most minimal items. Keep a few reusable bags in your car so next time you need to go to the supermarket you have some on hand, I always keep one stashed in the glove box, small pocket of my bag and in the buggy too. These organic cotton ones from Rethink are durable and expand to carry a lot, throw in some of their produce bags too and you won’t need to use one plastic bag on your next shopping trip.

3. The reusable coffee cup

The saviour of my morning, coffee. A takeaway coffee on the run is a god send but all those takeaway cups are doing more harm than good. Add up how many times you would buy coffee a week, that’s a lot of waste over a year! KeepCup are not only good for the environment but look great too! To date, they estimate KeepCup users have diverted over 3.5 billion disposable cups from landfill!

 4. The reusable water bottle

The best way to keep hydrated, Water! But those single use water bottles are not great for the environment and not to mention the cost per use. Grab a reusable bottle, fill at your tap and you're good to go!

Purity Glass Water bottles
GoodFor Metal Water bottles
